Signs or Symptoms of Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia affects the patient’s life in several aspects and cuts off his connection from real world around him. Symptoms or signs of schizophrenia appear in various forms from mental disability to physical anomaly. Some of the obvious and verified symptoms of schizophrenia are discussed below:

1- Hallucinations

It involves hearing strange voices, seeing weird things, feeling absurdities and smelling or toughing unusual things etc. Such voices, smell or things are normally strange for others often with no connection of real world. Another condition involve in hallucination is having severe fear of some unseen power that seems to be negative in character and control. Patient tells that somebody is controlling his thoughts and movements to use it according to his will for something wrong. He also feels that this unseen power will hurt him or even kill him anytime.

2- Delusions

Delusions depict false belief which is no factual basis at all. Like schizophrenic can doubt his family, friends or neighbors to control him through negative powers or trying to end his life, plotting conspiracies against him or poisoning his food etc. They often feel that radio or TV is directly warning him about something bad happening. Such false and baseless perceptions enhance the feeling of anxiety and fear thus making the life more complicated and miserable.

3- Abnormal Thought Pattern

In this condition patient experiences poorly organized thought patterns and difficulty in expressing his views. Such conditions can be categorized into ‘disorganized thinking’ and ‘thought blocking’. Disorganized thinking involves illogical thinking with no way to express them in normal flow while ‘thought blocking’ can stop them suddenly during continuous talk. It seems as some unseen power has withdrawn thoughts or words from their memory or blocked their way to express before others.

4- Movement Anomalies

It often involves extremes conditions from agitated movement to catatonic state. On one hand fear or anxiety makes them behave in agitated manner while on other hand severe depressive thoughts make them sit in same posture for several hours with no slight movement. Such still body condition is called catatonic state during which schizophrenic does not take any movement for long time period.

5- Flat Effect, No Response

During this condition patient show no response towards happy or sad events. His facial expressions, thinking and body movements seem to be irresponsive towards any change occur in their surroundings. Such condition is called flat effect which makes them detached from real world completely.

6- Personal Detachment

This condition involves absolute carelessness about one’s self particularly in the case of personal hygiene. They neglect themselves completely and take no interest in their looks and personality. Such patient often show laziness and lack of interest in keeping them neat and clean. Such condition makes them purely dependent upon their family and friends to take care of themselves.

7- Lack of Pleasure and Energy

Schizophrenia also causes to loss pleasure, interest and energy in routine life activities. Such patients do not take interest in daily life activities and don’t feel happy or excited at any pleasant happening. If some job or duty is assigned to them, they complete it late due to the lack of interest and energy in their work.

8- Cognitive Problems

Another major problem caused by schizophrenia is severe disturbance in cognitive abilities of patient. Usually these symptoms are hard to recognize until taken serious as a sign of mental disorder. Cognitive problems include lack of concentration, poor memory and indecisiveness, lack of organized and logical thinking lack of understanding, learning problem and expressing their views and emotions in normal way. These inabilities tarnish the social status, earning capacity and personal relations of a person suffering from mental illness of schizophrenia.
