Treating Borderline Personality Disorder
Though no treatment option including psychological therapies and medication can give assurance in treating borderline personality disorder completely but various options are applied to reduce the intensity of disorder and its impact over patient’s personality as much as possible. Dynamic psychotherapy, group psychotherapy and dialectical behavior therapy are one of those psychological therapies through which psychiatrists and clinicians are trying to defeat the extreme conditions of borderline personality disorder.
1- Applying Dynamic Psychotherapy
For several years dynamic psychotherapy has been applying in treating borderline personality disorder and to mitigate the misery of a suffering patient but still no reliable technique has been found helpful in this regard but in many conditions it helps in reducing the symptoms of disorder to certain extent. Moreover ‘Kernberg’ in 1984 evolved another therapy to reduce the level of impulsivity in these patients through ‘Expressive Psychotherapy’ but results were not so promising to rely upon it as useful treatment option in this case.
2- Involvement in Group Therapy
Psychiatrists also tried to apply group therapy in order to reduce the level of emotional intensity and arousal. They were intended to deal with increasing emotional severity by keeping such patient in a group where he could learn personality control and improvement techniques in a natural way. Moreover because of being a member of a large group the problem of social cut off and loneliness which results in depression and anxiety in such patients could also be easily managed. Though this kind of treatment also helped in improving the level of life quality in such cases but it could not be taken as the final or ultimate treatment method for borderline personality disorder.
3- Dialectical Behavior Therapy
After the unreliable outcomes of group therapy and dynamic therapy, psychiatrist developed another therapy named ‘dialectical behavior therapy’ to deal with the growing intensity of borderline personality disorder. This therapy proved more effective as compared to previous ones in treating and controlling the symptoms of borderline personality disorder.
4- Medication for Treating Borderline Personality Disorder
As far the medication is concerned, it can be used in dealing with depression, anxiety, impulsivity and extreme mood swings in a patient of borderline personality disorder. Various psychotic drugs including antidepressants and mood stabilizers are used to reduce depression, anger, aggressive behavior, extreme emotional arousal and to bring brakes during impulsive condition of a patient. These drugs help to suppress or control the deteriorating condition of such patient for shorter time period.
So whatever the treatment option is applied to treat borderline personality disorder it can help in improving the condition of a suffering individual for certain time period but as far as the ultimate and final treatment of this personality disorder is concerned there is still a room for further investigation and research to control it successfully.
