Dissociative Identity Disorder
Dissociative identity disorder (DID) is a complex and controversial psychological disorder which involves presence or more than one personality in single human being. People suffering from DID experience two or more personalities in themselves which are entirely different from each other in almost every aspect. The way of thinking, perceptions about people and things, reactions towards various conditions, behavior, body language and even hand writing of each personality is totally different from other personality. As such persona live with different identities within themselves therefore this disorder is also called split personality disorder or multiple personality disorder.
As far as its occurrence is concerned it occurs three times more in females as compared to males. People living in mental or have past traumatic experience are also more prone to develop dissociative identity disorder in them. These split personalities or identities living in same person are not only different from each other in their mental and psychological characteristics but also shows different physiological states including blood pressure and heart beat etc.
Split Personalities and Showbiz
This controversial psychological issue of multiple personalities has been an interesting subject for movie makers as well. A number of movies have been released in all part of world to justify and explain the presence of strange condition of split personalities. Particularly in United States several movies has been produced since 1950s on the issue of two to twenty two personalities present in same person. It is reported that DID is mostly found in North America as compared to rest of the world therefore it is often considered to have a cultural basis.
Multiple Personalities – A Reality or Myth
Though several cases of dissociative identity disorder have been proved its presence in our society but still major sections of researchers claim that there exists nothing like split personalities. There are several questions pointed towards the real existence of DID like why there is no history of traumatic past life in some cases and why it occurs in children as well who show no factor considered responsible for developing multiple personalities in same person.
Those who believe in the presence of split personalities disorder say that such confusions are caused by the complicated nature and structure of human brain which is hard to understand completely. Though there is no clear evidence or answer is found to satisfy the questions posed against the existence of multiple personality disorder but it does not mean that it not exist at all.
