Causes of Borderline Personality Disorder

As far as the causes behind borderline personality disorder are concerned there is no absolute finding which can prove enough to point out any particular reason for such abnormal personality trait but long term studies and professional research have concluded that there can involve brain malfunctioning, traumatic childhood experience, genetic factor and environmental hazards in developing such disturbed and unbalanced personality figure.

1- Brain Abnormality

Brain abnormality is one of the factors which are considered responsible for abnormal and extreme personality image. It can be present in any form including damage to the limbic portion of brain which controls emotional arousal and dysfunctioning of certain neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine etc. In any form of neuropsychological problem there is a chance of developing personality complications including the problem of borderline personality disorder. Persons having brain abnormality show biological tendency towards extreme reaction on minor happenings and severe disturbance of mind under the pressure of minor stress.

2- Genetic Factors

Genetic predisposition is also considered a contributing factor in developing borderline personality disorder. People with family history of borderline personality disorder are more likely to suffer from this problem in any stage of their life. In 7% cases of borderline disorder biological investigations have proved the presence of genetic factor in creating such abnormality in patient’s personality.  So whenever a patient is diagnosed for suffering from borderline personality disorder his family history is analyzed completely to point out the underlying problem and to devise the appropriate treatment strategy on its basis.

3- Socio- Economic Environmental Hazards

Another possibility which can results in developing this personality disorder is environmental impact over person’s thinking pattern which could exist in the form of socio-economic factors such person is handling with. Poor social status, continuous rejection and disapproval, persistent failure and negative remarks and above all physical or substance abuse all involved in creating long lasing impact over patient’s mind which gradually pushes him towards the dark corner of his life. Disturbance in relations either in the form of misunderstanding or separation could result in serious lasting affects on person’s mind and can make appearance in the form of severe personality disorder developing inside for many years. Poor mother-child relationship and separation between parents are main examples of such childhood traumas which can become a cause of in developing various personality imbalances including borderline personality disorder.

So if someone is diagnosed for having borderline personality disorder then it means that one of the above mentioned factors will be present there for creating such distressing condition in the life of a suffering person.
