Exploring ADHD in Children

Children suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are diagnosed between the age of 6 to 12 years because according to continuous studies by American Academy of Pediatrics it has been revealed that it is the best time period to diagnose ADHD in a child otherwise it does not seem possible to detect the presence of disorder before 5 years or after 12 years that is in teen age.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children is characterized by hyperactivity, impulsivity, constant motion, fidgeting, difficulties in listen and focusing, excessive talk, disturbance during playing, distractions and disturbing others continuously. Diagnosis of ADHD in children involves basic diagnostic steps along with gathering information about child’s medical history, his likes and dislikes, reactions over specific things, attentiveness, task accomplishing ability, learning skills and overall body movements etc. Moreover the behavior of such child is compared with other children of same age group or living in same circumstances to get a better idea about the causes and severity of ADHD.

Types of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Children

Types of ADHD in children include combined type, hyperactive type and inattentive type. Combined type involves inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Hyperactive type is also characterized by hyperactivity along with inability to pay attention while the symptoms of inattentive type of ADHD do not include over-activity or disturbance rather these symptoms are so quiet that can not be noticed as a pointing factor towards the presence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Children suffering from inattentive ADHD do not make noise or disturbance at home or in the classroom and keep themselves aloof from rest of the crowd. This thing is considered as a personal attitude or nature of being alone rather than the obvious symptoms of ADHD.

If your child is also exhibiting these symptoms continuously over the time period of six months or more than he or she must be checked by child health care specialists to properly diagnose the severity of disorder. Remember that ADHD in children is treatable to maximum extent where a child becomes completely able to learn cognitive skills, self control and managing abilities to improve the level of dependency in his future life.

One important thing which must be kept in mind that all such conditions or symptoms are not always an outcome of ADHD, there can involve other factors as well causing such abnormal life activities. These factors might include sudden death of loved ones, sudden loss of relationship like divorce, anxiety or depression etc.
