Autism – A Strange Brain Disorder

Autism is a neuro-developmental disorder which occurs in children and makes it hard for them to communicate with their surrounding world normally. A child suffering from autism starts showing symptoms before reaching the age of three years. His impaired social interaction is mainly caused by his disturbed neuro- developmental pattern which creates problems in information processing. Though the exact mechanism is not known but it is said that in this brain disorder neurons (nerve cells) becomes unable to communicate with each other normally which disturbed the whole communication process. About 1 to 2 children out of 1000 children can have possibility to suffer from this brain disorder.

What Causes Autism?

It is still a mystery that what actually causes autism. Usually it is said to run in families which means that genetic factor is involved behind such abnormal brain development but which gene is mainly responsible for it or what kind of mutations involved in this abnormality is still under research. Some researchers also point towards environmental factors, birth defects, pesticides, vaccines and other medical problems to be involved in creating this kind of brain disorder but again there is no evidence found to justify these arguments about the actual cause of autism.

Role of Family in Dealing with Child Suffering from Autism

As we know that autism makes a child unable to communicate with others in a normal way so in such situation his family members can play the most important role to manage his disturbed mental condition and to alleviate the misery of this disorder. Those families having autism suffering child are specially trained to manage the abnormality of this disorder. They have to make proper plans and way of communicating with the child which can help in reducing his helplessness and dependency.

Particularly if a patient of autism is passing through his teen age then his family members should be extra caring and conscious about his condition because teen age is the most distressing period for such patient. Moreover such families can also communicate other families passing through same trauma to discuss the problems and to get their solutions easily.

It’s true that managing a child with autism is not an easy task but the affection and care of family members and proper treatment plans can mitigate the severity of this disorder and can reduce the tension of such family a lot. So if you find a family suffering from this tense condition then urge them to get training for themselves and to get proper treatment for their poor child because it is difficult to manage but not impossible at all.

I think autism would be a less distressing thing if there was enough and better support for people on the autism spectrum and their families. Many of them are left alone.

    Best wishes,
