Symptoms of ADHD in Teens

Teens suffering from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder show different symptoms from those found in children suffering from same mental disability. Normally ADHD in teens is characterized by inattentiveness, hyperactivity, impulsivity, lack of concentration and insomnia. But some other symptoms are related to their specific teen age which cannot be seen in children. Those specific symptoms of ADHD found in teens are discussed below.

1- Hormonal Changes in Teen Age

Firstly teens with ADHD show more hyperactivity and lack of interest in routine life activities due to their hormonal change related to secondary sexual behavior. This thing increases their overactivity and makes them unmanageable at certain moments.

2- Poor Performance in Academic Field

Secondly lack of interest in this age leads towards lack of attention and concentration in school related activities including quizzes, assignments, practical activities, reading aloud, listening attentively and follow instructions properly. They do not do all this deliberately, rather they forget to do assignment, to keep there books safely, to remember the instruction of their teacher and to memorize their lesson. Research also reveals that such patients can’t wait for their turn during a classroom learning activity or during playing a game. They used to interrupt others while they are taking their turn. This thing can create disturbance in classroom environment and can lead to punishment from their teacher which is another negative impact upon their mental condition.

3- Failure in Extra Curricular Activities

Thirdly such patients also don’t get any success in their extra curricular activities. Reason is that they often failed during performance test needed for taking part in these activities and if they got a chance to participate in it they chow very poor performance throughout the activity. Such poor performance is only an outcome of their lack of attention and lack of interest. They start focusing attention on something else rather than paying attention to their targets. Continuously missing targets and detachment from real objective takes them out of group and they again remain alone in their own world with insulting tags of low grades in studies and poor performance in extra curricular activities.

4- Chances of Drug Abuse

Fourthly the patient of ADHD is more prone to indulge in heinous activities of drug abuse. Again the reasons are depressions, social rejection, anxiety, hypertensions and lack of interest in surrounding world and its objects. For a teen suffering from ADHD drug abuse is the best way to get rid of all tensions of his loneliness and rejection within few minutes without getting into the hassles of a boring world around them.

5- Risks of Being Injured by Drunk Driving

Fifthly such mentally disturbed teens are more likely to have road accidents as compared to healthier teens. Here again the factor is drug abuse particularly alcohol consumption is involved. When such a suffering teen drinks too much and comes to the road as a passenger walking along it or as a driver driving a vehicle, the chances of road accidents increase to maximum extent. It must be remembered that drunk driving is considered the main factor for road accidents happening everyday. So if a teen with ADHD drives a vehicle after consuming 6 to 8 glasses to alcohol he actually becomes a major life threatening risk for himself and for passenger as well present on the road at that time.

6- Lack of Mature Thinking Pattern

Sixthly lack of attention in ADHD patient lead towards immature pattern of thinking where he becomes unable to take right decision on right time. Such delay and wrong approach in reaching right decision becomes another factor behind their failures in managing life activities. In such case behavioral therapy does a lot to make them able to focus over things properly, to understand the realities and to discern the situations accurately so they could make best use of their thinking abilities in a right way at right time.
