Gout is the metabolic disorder. It is generally characterized by hyperuricaemia. Uric acid precipitates and deposits in kidneys and joints. When blood levels are high uric acid is less water soluble. Apart from this hyperuricaemia, secondary hyperuriceamia too occurs. It primarily occurs in: leukemias, lymphomas after chemotherapeutic treatment or radiation. Depending upon its type, gout is divided into 2 categories. They are, 1. Acute gout and 2. Chronic gout.
- Acute gout: this is the condition in which sudden onset of severe inflammation in small joint occurs. It is most common in joint of great toe. This might be due to the precipitation of urate crystals in joint space. Due to this the joint becomes swollen, red and very painful.thus this should not be ignored and it requires immediate treatment.
- Chronic gout: this is also termed as hyperuricaemia. In this type of gout the patient has persistent stiffness in joint between attacks with sensation of pain. Thus the gout becomes chronic. The urate stones or crystals may also be formed in kidney. Chronic gout may lead to permanent deformity as well as to disability.
In order to treat these 2 types of gout there are general drugs used for the treatment depending upon acute and chronic gout. Drugs used are listed as:
