Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a result of acid in the stomach which splatters into esophagus or the swallowing tube. Sometimes when the valve at the bottom of the esophagus opens at the wrong time, it gives way to the acid in the stomach. When the acid touches the sensitive lining of esophagus it creates a burning pain which is known as the heartburn. This could result in either a mild pain or an unbearable painful problem.

The symptoms of GERD differ from children to adults. Some of the symptoms found in adults are:

  • Heartburn which is a common symptom in almost everyone who suffers from GERD
  • Back pain
  • Sour taste in the mouth
  • Sour throat
  • Hoarseness
  • Nausea
  • And cough

Some of the symptoms found in children are:

  • Vomiting is a common symptom among children
  • Sensation of lump in throat
  • Tightness in throat
  • Cough
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • And chest pain

Symptoms of GERD in infants are:

  • Vomiting and constant cough is a common symptom among infants
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Irritation
  • Loss of appetite
  • Crying
  • Refusal to eat

The simplest and easiest way to treat Gastroesophageal reflux disease is to block the acid from the stomach. There are natural remedies which could fix your GERD but accepting the home remedies would mean bringing a drastic change in your lifestyle. Some of the home remedies are:

  • Ginger and garlic helps the digestion reducing the back up of contents in the esophagus
  • Fennel seeds are a big relief in heartburns
  • Herbal tea and Green tea
  • Apple cider vinegar taken with meals heal heartburns
  • Licorice and aloevera
  • Lemon juice with rock salt

Some of the medications for GERD are:

  • Antacids are usually the first drug prescribed to relieve the heartburn
  • Foaming agents will cover your stomach content with a foam that will prevent acid. This is done when the acid has not entered the esophagus
  • H2 blockers taken with a Proton Pump Inhibitor will provide with a short term relief.
  • Prokinetics strengthens the sphincter which will make the stomach empty faster.
