Numbness and Tingling in the back of the head and face

email

Numbness and tingling are decreased or no sensation in your skin which occur anywhere in your body. But usually affects your feet, hands, arms or legs. To some the sensation might seem like pins and needles, tickling, pricking, creeping, skin crawling and ant crawling.

The numbness in the face and back of the head is mediated by the same Trigeminal nerve that emerges from the brainstem and later divides into three branches which are ophthalmic nerve, maxillary nerve and mandibular nerve.

Some of the common causes of tingling and numbness are:

  • Remaining in the same seat or position for a long time
  • If a particular nerve that supplies blood to that specific body part is injured then that part will stop sensations due to lack of supply to that part.
  • Pressure on the spinal nerves
  • Unusual levels of calcium, potassium or sodium in the body.
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Transient ischemic attack or stroke
  • Toxic action on nerves from lead, alcohol or tobacco
  • Radiation therapy
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome can cause tingling in your wrist, fingers, hands or forearm
  • Panic attack or psychological stress

There are three major reasons for a facial numbness to result. They are:

  1. Brain damage occurred due to stroke. This stops oxygen and blood supply to face. The damage then causes paralysis in the face eventually leading to numbness.
  2. Nerve damage could be another cause. Nerve damage can be caused either by trauma or stress or it can be caused by a medical condition.
  3. Another cause is due to the effect of drugs

Treatments of head numbness are:

  • Treating the root cause rather than the symptom
  • Anti inflammatory drugs
  • Analgesics or anti depressants
  • Quit drinking, smoking and taking drugs
  • Anti coagulant therapy is sometimes used
  • Physical therapy
  • Supplements such as Vitamin B complex, calcium, magnesium

Treatments of facial numbness are:

  • Facial numbness is usually tied to medical conditions, trauma or drug but if these are ruled out then to diagnose the health of the nervous system the doctors recommend a CAT scan and an MRI scan .
  • Blood tests are also conducted to study the hormone and enzyme levels in the body.
