Leg Weakness- Causes, diagnosis and treatment

Leg weakness should not be confused by leg pain as it is the weakness of muscles of legs. This is a serious symptom and should not be taken lightly. You need to consult your doctor as soon as possible. Leg weakness could be due to various reasons such as injures or toxins. 1 million people of US are suffering due to leg weakness according to the studies.

Causes and treatment of leg weakness:

Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease:

is a genetic disease which affects the peripheral nerves. According to the studies every 1 in 2,500 people US are affected by Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease or CMT .The symptoms include weakness of legs muscles, the affected person can trip frequently or fall or there could be loss of muscles of lower legs, deformity of legs. This can also affect hands which lead to muscle weakness of hands. Symptoms of CMT start during teenage. The patient can have slight pain to severe one, people affected by such a disease can lead a normal life and is not life threatening.
Diagnosis is done by going through the history of the patient and of his family and other some other tests as prescribed by the neurologist.
As such there is no cure of CMT however the person can undergo training of muscles strength, use of pain killer medicines to ebb the pain, braces and sometimes your doctor can advise you surgery if necessary.

Multiple Sclerosis:

Multiple Sclerosis is a disease where the communication between the brain and other parts of body are interrupted and the initial symptoms are found in adults between the ages of 20 to 40 years. The affected person has difficulty in walking or standing or weakness of legs and can even have paralysis of legs, feeling of numbness in legs and pain. Some might have the problem of hearing, memory loss or a feeling of dizziness.

Diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis is done by physician when the disease starts but in some cases diagnosis is difficult.
There is as such no any proper treatment of Multiple Sclerosis. Physical therapy and exercise are useful to most of the patients. Some medicines such as natalizumab, copolymer I and Novantrone have been approved by FDA for treatment.

Polymyositis:

Polymyositis occurs when the muscles becomes inflamed and weak which happens mostly in adults who are above 30 years of age. In Polymyositis weakness is felt in the lower part of the legs and the person finds difficulty in walking and climbing stairs.
As such Polymyositis cannot be cured however few of the symptoms can be treated by taking rest, physical exercise, medication and heat treatment. In most of the cases physical exercise helps the patient to get back the strength in muscles.

Back Problems:

Many of us face back problems at some point in our life and in US according to the studies it is one of the major causes of disability. Due to back pains there may be weakness with pain in legs as the nerves gets compressed and affected person has difficulty in walking as his motion becomes slow.
