Leg pain in children is not a serious symptom but it should not be taken lightly if it is a persisting one. If it gets serious then you need to consult your doctor.
Restless Leg Syndrome: Restless leg syndrome happens to be one of the common causes of pain in legs. In such condition the pain is felt more when it is in rest and while in motion pain is less. The pain becomes more in evening and during night. Restless leg syndrome can occur at any age and even in children. This sort of pain can even be hereditary.
Growing pain: Growing pain is being said to affect all the children between the ages of 3 to 12 years of age. It is the ache in the legs of kids mostly during night. Growing pain cannot be termed as a disease as the pain usually stops once the children reach teenage.
Children often experience this pain either behind the knees or in front of the calves or in front of thighs. Doctors say that since kids are active during day time hence they show these symptoms. Many times kids wake up from the sleep due to pain. Growing pain can be treated by massaging the area. Pain killer medicines should not be given to kids unless prescribed by a doctor.
Legg-Calve-Perthes disease: Legg –Calve-Perthes disease is found in boys who are of 4 to 10 years of age. This occurs when there is temporary loss of blood flow to the hip joint due to which the bone dies. This affects one hip but can affect both the hips. The symptoms include limping, pain in knee and thighs, legs can become of unequal length. Treatment can be done by physical therapy, medicines and in chronic cases surgery.
Fractures: Fractures are very common in children as they are more active than the adults. A fracture can lead to swelling of legs or pain or kids might feel difficulty in walking.
Osteomyelitis: Osteomyelitis is a bone infection occurring due to bacteria Staphylococcus aureus is found mostly in kids and teenagers who are very active and get injuries fast. Osteomyelitis affects the long bones of arms and legs in kids and teenagers. Children suffering from this have pain in the affected area and other symptoms include feeling of tiredness, the skin of the affected area becomes red and swollen. Treatment of Osteomylitis is not easy as intravenous antibiotics are given after admitting to hospital.
Flat feet: Flat feet is a condition where the longitudinal arc is not developed and it comes in contact with ground and is found mostly in infants. It leads to pain in feet or pain in the lower part of the leg. Flat feet can be treated by taking rest, a surgery can also be advised or anti inflammatory medicines can be prescribed by your physician.
Osgood-Schlatter disease: Osgood-Schlatter disease occurs mostly in teenaged boys who are athletic in nature. It causes pain and swelling below the knee.Osgood-Schlatter disease can be diagnosed by doing X-ray and treatment is done by taking rest or by taking pain killer medicines or applying ice to the affected area.
