Numbness in legs, tingling feet and toes could be due to various reasons which could be as follows:
1. Sitting with legs crossed: Many times we sit with our legs being crossed for long hours which causes pressure on nerves of your legs and hence causes leg numbness. It is temporary and can be treated by walking for few minutes or changing positions while sitting.
2. Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy: Diabetes neuropathy is defined as the damage of
nerve of hands and legs due to diabetes. The damage of nerves in hands or legs arouses a feeling of numbness in feet. If a person is diabetic it is essential that he/she sees his/her doctor in regular basis and gets foot examined every year. For a diabetic peripheral neuropathic patient the doctor will examine your heart rate, muscle strength, blood pressure and your sensitivity to positions to determine the extent of numbness in your legs, hands and feet. The feeling of numbness in feet can be mild to severe with pain and tingling feet and toes.
3. Leriche’s Syndrome : Leriche’s syndrome can be defined as a condition where there is a blockage in the terminal aorta of the heart. This is however a rare condition mostly affecting men. Since, the flow of blood is blocked to the lower part of the body and the legs too it leads to a feeling of numbness in legs other symptoms could be fatigue and feeling of cold in the feet.
4. Spinal Stenosis: In simple terms Spinal Stenosis is defined as a symptom that causes narrowing of your spine. It is very common in adults who are of 50 years and above. Arthritis can also lead to Spinal Stenosis.The narrowing of spinal cord can lead to pressure on spine which causes numbness in legs. Treatment for Spinal Stenosis can be physical therapy, medications or surgery in extreme case.
5. Transverse Myelitis: Transverse Myelitis is the inflammation of spinal cord due to caused mostly due to virus or bacteria. It is not a very common condition and occurs 1 to 5 per million populations according to the reports. Both adults as well as children can be affected due to Transverse Myletis.The spinal cord carries the
Motor nerve fibers to the limbs and legs and the sensory nerve fibers back to brain. Due to inflammation of spinal cord this procedure gets affected and hence it leads to the numbness of legs and others symptoms such as back pain and bladder
dysfunction.
6. Sciatica: Sciatica is a pain which affects the low back to the knees. Sciatica is caused due to inflammation of sciatic nerve which happens to be the largest nerve of our body or when the disc gets displaced from its original place and puts pressure on the nerve root which is in the lower back and hence causes numbness of legs, tingling feeling of feet and toes. Sciatica can get aggravate due to walking or bending from waist and it can be treated by taking rest.
7. Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome: Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition where there is compression of tibia nerve at the ankle. It can be caused due to varicose veins or broken or sprained ankle and causes pain in the legs, numbness and tingling feet and toes.
