What is Ecstasy?

Ecstasy is a kind of semi-synthetic drug derived from sassafras tree oil that stimulates the central nervous system. It is chemically known as 3, 4-methylenedioksy-methamphetamine (MDMA) and is linked to amphetamine and methamphetamine.

Categorized by the United State’s Drug Enforcement Administration as a Schedule I drug, Ecstasy is banned in most countries and is in fact restricted even for medicinal use.

Ecstasy Forms and Use

Ecstasy Pills or Tablets – Ecstasy is commonly used in the form small and round pills. These pills generally contain 20-90 mg of diluted MDMA hydrochloride. These tablets are bitter to taste and are sometimes inserted into the anus to help easier absorption into the blood.

MDMA Powder – White crystalline MDMA powder contains high quality of pure MDMA hydrochloride and is used by sniffing or ingesting. It can even be rolled into cigarettes.

MDMA Freebase – It is in the form of oil and used for smoking.

Combination of Ecstasy with Other Drugs – Ecstasy is also used in combination with other drugs like LSD, ketamine, psilocybin mushrooms and ephedrine.

How Does Ecstasy Work?

Ecstasy works by triggering the release of substances like serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, oxytocin and antidiuretic hormone. These substances are responsible for various moods and alertness.

Short-Term Effects of Ecstasy

30-60 minutes after the intake of ecstasy, the initial effects are noticed and reach a peak within 90 minutes. It stays that way for a few hours and takes about 24 hours for the effect to wear down. The individual experiences various types of effects like empathy, euphoria, afterglow, mild hallucinations and distorted touch sense.

Ecstasy Overdose (Intoxication) Symptoms and Signs

The symptoms of ecstasy overdose include anxiety, restlessness, increased palpitations, nausea, dry mouth, heavy sweating, dilated pupils, unclear vision, chills, high blood pressure and difficulty in sleep in urination.

Overdose of ecstasy can be life-threatening in cases of asthma, seizures, heart disease, hyperthermia, water poisoning and dehydration. Though not yet certain, it is reported to cause brain damage due to long-term use.

Ecstasy Withdrawal Symptoms

The withdrawal symptoms that follow the pleasurable effects of ecstasy include panic attacks, paranoia, depression, anxiety, and decrease in appetite, lack of concentration, sleeping problems, tiredness and craving for more of the same drug.

How Addictive is Ecstasy?

Ecstasy can be addictive in a psychological way. Physically too, tolerance develops faster in ecstasy users and the urge to have more and more drug increases steadily.
