What is diaper rash ?
Diaper rash is a common problem in babies. This problem usually occurs from seven months to nine month old baby. Later on it diminishes. It is generally a contact dermatitis. Skin becomes red and irritated near the diaper area. the different types of rash are,
- Allergic rash: it is found near the buttocks of the baby.
- Friction rash: this is caused due to friction at diaper area. it is due to tight elasticity.
- Irritation rash: this might be due to contact with soaps, stool and urine. Due to this irritation exists.
- Seborrhea rash: this type of rash has greasy look, which is grey in color and associated with yellow scales. It appears around skin folds.
- Intertrigo rash: this type of rash is the most common type of all. It is generally caused due to repeated exposure to moist heat.
Symptoms of diaper rash
- Redness of the skin, especially buttock area.
- The area becomes moist and painful. This is mostly seen in hip region as well as groin.
- Rash like sores is observed.
- In new borns small fissures are common.
Diaper rash Causes
Diaper rash is generally caused due to over exposure to moisture. Apart from this the other cause for painful diaper rash could be due to stool and urine. Even chemicals and other materials are responsible for diaper rash. The main cause for diaper rash is due to infrequent diaper changes. Hot and humid weather too causes rash. Sensitive skin is prone to diaper rash. Other causes for diaper rash include, urine infections and over exposure to moisture. Poorly washed and improper fitted diapers too causes rash.
Prevention and treatment of diaper rashes
The babies with sensitive skin should be given with utmost importance as they are prone to skin allergies as well as diaper rash. This should be minimized with proper care, prevention and treatment. The basic points should be kept in mind when dealing with diapered baby. This includes:
- The diaper should be changed frequently that is the soiled diaper after wetting should be changed.
- For 10-15 minutes the baby should be exposed to air without diaper.
- Wash the diapers properly.
- Gels which absorb the moisture are good to treat diaper rash.
