Diagnosis for food poisoning also depends upon the type of infection and nature of symptoms showing during the problem. If a patient recovers in a couple of days or shows gradual recovery in its physical and mental position then no specific diagnosis is carried out and case is treated as normal food infection. But in case patient is showing severe symptoms with continuously deteriorating health condition then case is taken as serious health concern and proper diagnosis is recommended to find the actual cause of food infection. Here we have discussed important diagnostic test suggested to start the proper treatment of food poisoning.
Blood Test
First of all the blood test is carried out to confirm the type of bacteria or virus causing illness. In this test blood sample of patient is taken and tested to discover the main cause of illness and the level of its severity. On the basis of blood test results further it is decided that whether there is a need to take more test or treatment can be started.
Stool Test
If blood test is not proving enough to root out the actual cause behind food poisoning then another basic test that is stool test is recommended to know the actual factor behind this entire disturbing situation.
Imaging Techniques; CT Scan and MRI
In most of the cases of food poisoning these two tests are enough to solve the confusion of doctors but in case infection has disturbed the mental health then more steps are taken to resolve the issue completely. In such situation imaging techniques are used for further diagnosis including CT Scan and MRI.
CT Scan stands for ‘Computerized Tomography Scan’ in which X-rays are used to take the cross sectional images of internal body parts while MRI stands for ‘Magnetic Resonance Imaging’ in which magnetic field and radio waves are used to produce the detailed images of body organs. These imaging techniques help a lot to find out the real cause and severity of damage caused by these poisoning factors.
Lumber Puncture
Lumber Puncture is another diagnostic test which is specifically recommended to check the severity of infection in nervous system in this test a sample of cerebrospinal fluid (CFC) is taken out with the help of a needle inserted in the area of spinal cord. This fluid surrounds the brain and spinal cord and its test proves the presence of bacteria in brain if nervous system is really damaged due to food poisoning.
After passing through all these diagnostic tests the actual cause of food poisoning is find out and proper treatment starts to eliminate the problematic factor at all.
