Definition:
The coma of severe diabetic acidosis.
Investigations:
(a) Blood test—Leucocytosis, E. S. R.— high, Uric acid level raised. (b) Urine test—Volume diminished and high color
Complications:
(a) Chronic pyelonephritis, renal failure.
(b) Renal calculus, renal colic. (c) Hypertension. (d) Atherosclerosis. (e) Diabetes mellitus, (f) Acute tenosynovitis, bursitis, supraspinatous tendinitis.
Prognosis:
In case of early diagnosis and proper treatment, the prognosis is favourable.
Treatment:
A. Acute—(l) Rest in bed and immobilisation of the affected part. (2) Vegetarian diet with plenty of fluids. 3) Hot or cold compress over the affected joints.
B. Chronic—(l) Diet—purine containing foods are to be avoided. Fat intake should be minimised to prevent obesity. Plenty of fluids should be taken. (2) Moderate exercise is also beneficial. (3) Treatment of complications.
