The plantar fascia is a tissue which lies on the bottom portion of the foot. It attaches the heel bone to the toes. Planter fasciitis is the foot and heel pain which is caused by inflammation. The people affected by this problem usually feel severe stabbing sensations or burning pain which usually gets worse while waking up as the plantar fascia has contracted over the night.
There are several ways to treat this problem. The several steps include:
Preventive measures: there are ACE wraps which keep the foot of the affected immobilized.
- The low-dye taping methods provide support to the plantar fascia and helps in reducing more pronation.
- There are arch supports which are available in full shoe size or three quarters which provide a cushioned heel to the fascia.
- Night splints are used to prevent shortening of plantar fascia and Achilles tendon during the night.
Medications: the aim of medications is to reduce the morbidity and prevent further complications.
- NSAIDs or NonSteroidal Anti-Inflammatory drugs decrease the inflammation and gradually interfere with the occurring which result in inflammation. Ibuprofen is an example which inhibits the reactions of inflammation and pain. These are used to produce anti-inflammatory effect and analgesia.
- Corticosteroids have anti-inflammation properties which cause various profound metabolic effects. These also develop the body’s immune system. Methylprednisolone is an example of corticosteroids which decreases the inflammation and reduces the capillary permeability.
The home remedies include losing weight which can reduce the strain on the heel, stretching the heels before waking up, avoid barefoot walking and wearing cushioned and comfortable shoes. Another natural treatment is RICE treatment which includes proper Rest, Ice, applying Compression and Elevation.
Performing several calf stretching exercises after waking up helps in eliminating the plantar fasciitis problem. Stretching also should be done during the day. Another exercise includes leaning against the wall while the plantar fascia is stretched as the foot is planted firmly on the ground. This exercise helps in reducing the foot tension. Heel cradles or cups also benefit the fascia muscles. These can easily fit any sort of footwear.
