Acute Right Lower Abdominal Pain

A sudden and newly appearing acute right lower abdominal pain can be caused due to any of the following conditions:

Appendicitis – Sudden moderate to severe pain is noticed in appendicitis which starts from the navel and proceeds towards the right hip. Often the pain is accompanied by low-grade fever, nausea or vomiting. CT scan and blood tests are reliable for diagnosing in this condition.

Inguinal Hernia – Pain observed on the protruding of a small intestine part through the gap in the abdominal wall muscle can be diagnosed by physical examination.

Volvulus – Cecum volvulus is usually noticed in children with symptoms like sudden pain in the lower right abdomen, vomiting, bloating and nausea. An X-ray with barium swallow contrast can reveal this particular cause.

Pain Related to Female Reproductive Organs – Painful ovulation, rotation of the right side ovary, ruptured ovarian cyst, miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy can give rise to a sharp pain in the lower right abdomen.

Pain Related to Male Reproductive Organs – A right lower abdominal pain is noticed in disorders related to spermatic cord, testicular veins and right testis torsion.

Pain Related to Abdominal Muscles – A right lower abdominal pain is also noticed in abdominal muscle disorder conditions like Psoas abscess.

Skin Related Disorders – Herpes Zoster results in a burning pain and producing a rash over spinal nerves’ course.

Chronic Right Lower Abdominal Pain

A long-term or recurring abdominal pain in the lower right part can last for a few months to years. Such chronic right lower abdominal pain can be caused due to the following conditions:

Crohn’s Disease – It usually affects adults of young to middle age. The symptoms noticed along with right lower abdominal pain are nausea, diarrhea, mild fever, bloody stool, mouth ulcers and skin rash. A colonoscopy is the best way to diagnosis a case of Crohn’s disease.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome – Irregular periods, increased blood pressure and hirsutism are seen in PCOS in addition to pain in the lower right abdomen. It can be diagnosed by using transvaginal ultrasound test.

Endometriosis – Endoscopy of the abdominal cavity can reveal the presence of a condition known as endometriosis. It occurs due to some abnormal growth of uterine mucosa on the exterior part of uterus.

Carcinoid – If a slow growing tumor appears in the appendix or cecum, it can result in severe lower right abdominal pain combined with nausea, hot flashes and diarrhea.
