Flatulence happens with the passage of gas (flatus) through the anus or rectum. When a person digests, there are a lot of chemical changes and reactions that occur—and it is inevitable that gases may be produced as a by product. This is a normal occurrence but there may be instances that production of gas becomes too excessive that the passage of flatus exceeds the normal frequency. This is where flatulence can become a problem.
Flatulence Causes
- Excessive swallowing of air—the habit of eating too fast, chewing gums frequently and sucking on candies, etc increases one’s intake of air. This will lead to problems leading to bloating and subsequently flatulence. Belching may also occur alongside flatulence.
- Food intake is also a big problem when we speak of flatulence. Like for example, there are some forms of carbohydrates which our digestive systems finds hard to digest and break down. When bacteria in the intestines react with these carbohydrates, gas is produced in the process.
- Flatulence also happens commonly in people with predisposing conditions, most especially those with intestinal disorders like sprue or celiac disease, irritable bowel disease, chronic constipation, etc.
Flatulence Remedies
- Lessen Intake of Gas Forming Foods. Gas forming foods are common flatulence causes. These gas forming foods—as their collective term suggests, produce gas once the intestines subject them to digestion. Some of the foods which cause gas are meats and fatty foods, broccoli, asparagus, cabbage, as well as refined carbohydrates like white flour and refined sugar.
- Eat Slowly But Surely. Another effective remedy is through eating slowly and chewing your foods well. When you eat fast, you tend to take in more air than usual. Eating isn’t meant to be a speedy activity… for eating too fast can also lead to other conditions, too aside from flatulence. Bloating, belching and gas can also occur when you eat fast and without taking time to munch and chew the foods fully. Make every meal a time for you to bond with other people, talk and share some stories. This way, you not only enrich your stomach, you also keep your heart healthy.
- Treatment of Underlying Diseases. Treatment of underlying diseases like irritable bowel syndrome, sprue, celiac disease and the likes, are also effective means of flatulence remedies. Getting rid of, if not managing these conditions well can result to relief from flatulence.
- Exercise and Activity Levels. Be sure to involve yourself in physical activities. Many attacks of flatulence occur when a person lives a sedentary lifestyle. You can walk around the house or the office after you eat, this way the intestines are stimulated to move.
Passing out flatus in public is humiliating and it would definitely be hard to save your face in the public. As normal as it may sound, too much flatus can wreck your personality and social life. As such, it is very important for people to know how flatulence happens and what are the things that one can do to remedy this condition.
