How Often Are We Supposed to Wash Our Hair?

A woman generally spends 23 minutes/day doing her hair. This means that almost 2 hours and a half are spent weekly for this activity only. While almost 40% women wash their hair daily, a new study proved that many men and women give up daily shampooing, hoping for their hair to grow faster and thicker.
This movement gathered many believers, who don’t wash their hair for weeks. Stars such as Jessica Simpson and Robert Pattinson are among them.
When asked, scientists declared that washing ones hair daily is under no circumstances necessary for a good scalp and hair health.

The scalp and the hair represent two very different parts of the body – the scalp is the “living” element which needs cleaning in order to keep it healthy, while the hair represents the “dead” component which degenerates if it is washed often with an aggressive shampoo.

By removing the healthy natural grease layers existent on each hair through daily shampooing, the hair becomes less resistant. Consequently, the shampoo is benefic for the scalp but not for your hair.
Specialists recommend a day break within hair washes. When washing your hair, the shampoo must be applied on the scalp and one should avoid shampooing the whole length of the hair in order to postpone any possible damages.
For people with greasy hair who intend taking a break from daily shampooing, specialists recommend the use of a special shampoo for their hair type for the days they plan to wash their hair.

Those who take long breaks between hair washes must be careful to the health of their scalp. People with dandruff, for instance, must know the fact that refusing constantly to wash their hair will only make the situation worse, according to George Costerellis, dermatologist at Pennsylvania University.
Another negative effect is stopping hair growth. “If you reach the other side and don’t wash your hair for a week, dead hairs will accumulate on the surface of your scalp”, says Costerellis. Removing dead hair can stimulate hair growth. It is proven that people who had spent a lot of time without washing their hair did not need to get their hair cut.
