Teenager with 4 kidneys is willing to donate them

email

A girl of 18 years old, Laura Moon, from Whinmoor in Leeds, has four kidneys. All of them are functional and growing naturally. She would like to donate the additional kidneys to people who are helpless without a transplant.

The most interesting fact is that Laura became conscious of her ‘unusual anatomy’  only six months ago when she went to have an ultrasound scan at the Seacroft Hospital in her birthplace of Leeds. The ultrasound scan was to examine stomach pains because of a road accident. She told that she realized that the doctor scanning her hadn’t said anything for a long time. She thought he was going to give her some bad news, but then he said that she has got four kidneys.
Two of Ms. Moon’s kidneys measure 14cm and the other two are 9cm. The doctors who treated her, asked for her agreement to take photos and to show them to University students.

There are a lot of people who need kidney transplant. For instance, a three-year-old Luke Heppenstall, a Leeds resident, right away needs a new kidney after both of his were removed because of cancer. Laura Moon who heard about Luke’s problem is willing to help the child. .

She mentioned that she doesn’t know how exactly works organ donations, but she realizes that she have four kidneys and that she would like to help someone like Luke if possible.

The expert in urological surgeon Dr Robyn Webber, of Fife Acute Hospitals mentioned that this is a quite rare situation. In general they are left alone unless the patient is suffering any problems. But Laura will be able to manage absolutely well with two, so assuming they are working properly there is no motivation why she shouldn’t donate them to people in need.

Laura Moon who is about to start work as a customer services adviser, is now undergoing examinations to see if all her four kidneys are functioning well and if she is be able to donate one, to begin with.

One of the causes why people have multiple, or duplex organs is not yet acknowledged, but one in 125 people have one extra kidney, in general a partial organ. Only a handful of people in the UK have four kidneys, though having three is comparatively ordinary. But Laura’s case is the rarest of the rare because all of her four kidneys are fully formed and functional.
