Brain foods: Best to choose and indicated to avoid

The brain is one of our most precious organs as it is the control center of our whole body. Having a well developed brain is one thing, but maintaining its health is another thing. We all want to keep on making good decisions, on getting good grades in school, on being accurate at work and at memorizing easy everything. All these can be achieved if we feed our brain with the right nutrients and avoid the ones that could be harmful.

Here is a list of aliments that can make your brain a lot more productive and of aliments that you should avoid eating if you want to keep your brain healthy.

1. Coffee- great for short term memory, especially if you are during exams or you need to learn a lot of things in a short time! Also, studies have shown that caffeine is great for slowing the memory aging process, for improving attention and skills that are necessary for solving problems as long as it is consumed with moderation. Do not think that by drinking three cups of coffee a day you will be able to boost your memory functions because you will only interfere with your brain’s normal sleeping program. Consider sleeping as a rebooting program for your brain. In this way when you wake up you are ready for handling a new day.

2. Blueberries- for long term memory. These tasty fruit contain antioxidants that will keep Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson away from you. Consumed fresh (they can be found in July) you also take advantage of their full brain boosting effects and can get to improve your cognitive functions. If you want to consume blueberries even outside their season, you can put some packs in the refrigerator. It is true that they will loose some of their benefic properties, but their will still be good for your health.

3. Fish- mostly salmon and mackerel. As this type of meat contains omega 3 fatty acids and niacin you can consider yourself protected against Alzheimer’s disease. Fish meat also improves your thinking speed and slows down cognitive decline in the elders.

4. You might thing that if fats like omega 3 can help your brain, why not eat ice cream instead as this also contains fats too. Well, fats contained by ice creams are not good for the brain as they are saturated fats and they only block the flow of nutrients to the brain by clogging the blood vessels that supply the brain.

5. Focusing problems? Need to be more alert? Drink peppermint tea. It seems that even the peppermint smell triggers some receptors in the brain and makes you focus better on what you are doing.

6. Candies - not good for the brain. They only induce a fuzzy state of mind as they alter the brain’s glucose balance making it high and then low in a short period of time. If you feel like going for something sweet, then try pure dark chocolate (keep away from white chocolate as this is not even chocolate at all as it does not contain any cocoa solids) and your mood will get better thanks to serotonin that is secreted more due to chocolate intake.
