Myths about Using Antidepressants
For many years psychological professionals have been using antidepressants as a preferred way of treating various psychological problems involving depression and anxiety. In most of the cases these antidepressants have proved their worth by saving several precious lives by keeping them from engulfed by severe depressed states but still there exist various myths and fears related to the use of antidepressants to treat depression problems. Some of those myths are discussed here along with describing the right side of reality.
1- Antidepressants Causes to Gain Extra Weight
First of all antidepressants are blamed to increase body weight gradually which makes situation more complicated for a person already suffering from mental problem. It is true that like other medications, antidepressants have also side effects on heart beat, blood pressure and body weight either by increasing them or decreasing in some cases. But this fact cannot be attributed to all types of antidepressants. Most of them act in a positive way with no disturbance in physiological functioning but in case if someone feels any inner disturbance or weight change then he must consult to his physician to make any change in its dosage.
2- Antidepressants Bring Unexpected or Undesired Changes in Personality
Secondly some people feel that antidepressants might change their personality in an unusual way and such changes will not be reversible. In this way antidepressants are considered the facto to bring undesired changes in user’s personality. It is true that antidepressants change the present state of personality of its users but this change actually appears in the form of total come back to real life activities not as a disturbance or irregularity in one’s personality traits.
3- Antidepressants Enhance the Probability of Suicide Attempts
Thirdly antidepressants are considered an important factor behind enhancing the probability of suicide attempts. According to the results of many studies conducted to find out the reasons behind suicide attempts, the use of antidepressants has been found common in most of the cases. It could be possible that most of those persons were taking antidepressants but correlating suicide attempt with the use of antidepressants will not be a sensible approach. Such persons are often the victim of depression and use various techniques to get out of such depressed state of life. So antidepressants could be one of those treatment options they were applying to deal with depression. It means that the actual cause behind suicide attempt is depression not antidepressants used to overcome it.
4- Antidepressants Make Users Dependent Upon them for Whole Life
Fourthly it is assumed that antidepressants make its user dependent upon it for rest of the life which creates a sense of weakness and dependability in patient’s life. Here we have to look at both sides of reality. If on one hand antidepressant drugs make most of the patients able to regain normal life control in a long run then on other hand in some cases they have to depend upon them for whole life. But it depends upon the nature and severity of mental problem they are suffering from. The time period for taking antidepressants to deal with depression issues varies from case to case. The number of cases in which antidepressants helped to restore normal life flow is much more than those in which patient have to be dependent upon them for whole life.
5- Antidepressants Disturbs the Sexual Life
Fifthly antidepressants are considered damaging for sexual characteristics but again it is not the whole reality. Instead depression affects patient’s sexual capabilities and depressed normal sexual behavior. In such situation only these antidepressants help them out to get back to normal life activities successfully.
6- Antidepressants cannot be managed Under Health Insurance Plan
Sixthly it is considered that using antidepressants could be very costly way to treat depression and cannot be covered by health insurance plans. But it is not the reality health insurance covers the cost of antidepressants effectively but premium or other charges vary depending upon the type and dosage of drugs required per month. But if someone is finding it hard to manage the cost of antidepressants under health insurance cover then he can purchase it in generic form for only $15 cost per month.

I’m sorry but a lot of this is just not true. Anti-depressants DO create a high chance of weight gain and sexual dysfunction. Some don’t (I’m taking Wellbutrin now) but come with a host of other side effects.
I do not regret taking choosing to take anti-depressants but I can’t pretend its an ideal solution (obviously there isn’t one – spiritual practices help some people an immense amount, although if you are not inclined that way thats not much help either.)
I’m not trying to put anyone off. Its just that’s the truth. Read lots and lots of message boards and forums. Talk to as many people as you can. And yes different drugs will affect you differently and you may spend a while finding one that works best for you.
Good luck.
