Cholera outbreak in Nigeria – six more victims

Cholera claims another six lives in northern Nigeria, after killing 200 people in the past few months. Health commissioner Shehu Sambawa announced there are 182 recent cases in the Kebbi state town of Koko, where 70 people died in less than two months : ‘We have recorded six deaths from cholera in Koko in the past two weeks that infected 182 people.’ Local media reports 234 deaths occurred in 15 Nigerian states this year. Rainy seasons are generally responsible for the occurrence of the disease in Nigeria. The country’s senate started an investigation to determine what causes the repeated outbreaks of cholera.

Cholera is an acute infection of the small intestine, characterized by vomiting and severe diarrhea that leads to quick dehydration and is potentially leathal. The bacterium causing the disease, Vibrio cholerae, has a very short incubation period, symptoms of the affliction being visible in one to five days. It is generally transmitted through contaminated food or water and it usually occurs in overcrowded countries that have poor sanitation. The disease causes more than 100,000 fatalities each year worldwide.
