What We Need To Know About Celexa vs. Paxil
Celexa and Paxil are both SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors). These drugs maintain a stable balance of the neurotransmitter Serotonin inside our brain to keep our moods normal. Celexa has the generic Citalopram while Paxil is under Paroxetine. Celexa must not be taken if you have any of the following:
- Personal or family history of bipolar disorder;

- Suicidal attempts;
- Allergic reaction to similar drugs; and
- Pregnancy and lactation.
On the other hand, Paxil must not be given if the patient has any of the following conditions:

How To Take Celexa vs. Paxil?
Celexa and Paxil need to be taken in the exact dose prescribed by the physician. Also, these drugs must be taken with a full glass of water. One must not stop taking Celexa and Paxil immediately without any consent from the physician.
When taking Paxil Liquid Suspension, one must use a medicine cup in order to get the correct amount of dose. Never use a regular spoon or cup to measure the drug as it may not give you the accurate amount of drug.
Both drugs can be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions When Taking Celexa vs. Paxil?
The following drugs may present with interaction when taken with Celexa:
- Drugs that control appetite like Fenfluramine and Phentermine;
- MAOIs;
- Phenothiazines;
- Escitalopram (Sertraline);
- Procarbazine;
- Tryptophan; and
- Venlafaxine.
As for Paxil, the following drugs may cause interactions too:
- MAOIs like Marplan, Nardil and Parnate;
- SSRI drugs like Sertraline;
- Procarbazine;
- Tryptophan;
- Medicines for migraine or triptan drugs;
- NSAIDs for pain; and
- Medications for anxiety, depression and psychosis.
Side Effects When Taking Celexa vs. Paxil?
Celexa and Paxil may present with the same side effects like:
- Allergic reaction to the drugs (swelling, chest tightness, itchiness, etc);
- Hallucinations or detachment from reality;
- Seizures and convulsions;
- Abnormal bleeding; and
- Suicidal attempts.
Moreover, Paxil can also bring out unique side effects like:
- Painful and prolonged erection in men;
- Trouble urinating; and
- Black and bloody stools or urine.
