Women suffering from ovarian cancer face a major difficulty if their bodies do not respond to chemotherapy. Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center say they have discovered the cause of chemotherapy resistance – a molecular pathway – and may be able to reverse the process with drugs. ‘Targeted therapies that increase a tumor’s sensitivity to chemotherapy offer the potential to improve patient survival,’ said Johnathan Lancaster, M.D., Ph.D., senior author of the study published in the journal ‘Clinical Cancer Research’. This discovery could increase the patients’ chances of survival: ‘Intriguingly, patients who had lots of cancer remaining at the conclusion of their surgery but whose tumors had low levels of pBAD protein, had better survival than patients with very little cancer remaining following surgery, but who had high levels of pBAD protein.’

The scientists identified 26 patients that had removed polyps , and they randomly chose 9 people and gave them metformin and the other 14 people placebo. After one month the result was that the people who had been treated with metformin had fewer lesions, whereas the second group had no change.
