A recent unusual study published in the ‘Emergency Medicine Journal’ finds the best music alternative when heart attack victims are undergoing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Health care workers have long been advised to use rhythmic music in order to maintain the correct pace of chest compressions. Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive” hit did manage to help first-aid staff maintain rhythm, but they were unsuccessful in applying the correct pressure.
Researchers led by Malcolm Woollard (Coventry University,UK) asked 74 volunteers to perform CPR on a mannequin while listening to ‘Achy Breaky Heart’ by Billy Ray Cyrus or Mirwais’ ‘Disco Science’- or not hearing any music at all. ‘Disco Science’ turned out to be the most successful in helping volunteers maintain the correct pace of compression, scoring an 82 percent accuracy, while ‘Achy Breaky Heart’ only got a 64 percent rate, even lower than ‘no music’ 65 percent precision. However, results were unsatisfactory, as one third of the participants still did not apply the right pressure and half of them failed to use the correct hand positioning.
All things considered, the results were not in favor of music, the researchers concluding that other audio devices for maintaining rhythm could even prove more valuable. ‘When considering the combined importance of correct depth and rate, the authors are unconvinced that music provides any benefit in improving the quality of CPR compared with a metronome or audible feedback,’ Wollard and colleagues wrote.
