Suffering from asthmatic bronchitis is a troublesome condition. Even just the presence of a single disease, i.e. asthma and bronchitis, is already difficult and irksome. Asthma and bronchitis may occur in separate instances. Asthma is simply the inflammation of the airways of the lungs… including the main bronchi, even up to the alveolar levels. Asthma is commonly caused by allergens, stress, anxiety, etc. Bronchitis, on the other hand is an occurrence when the bronchi becomes inflamed due to either a bacterial or viral infection. In either case, the person suffering will experience such difficulty in breathing and chest tightness. When a person suffers from asthma and chronic bronchitis frequently and exacerbation occurs more often than not, a person is said to have a disease called asthmatic bronchitis.

Asthmatic Bronchitis—What Is It?

Asthmatic bronchitis happens when a person have been experiencing asthma and subsequently developed bronchitis—or it may happen the other way around. Asthmatic bronchitis is caused by many factors and here are some of them which can trigger the occurrence of said condition:

-         The fumes emitted when a person smokes, or other forms of industrial smoke which can be irritating, can trigger the bronchial walls and airways to constrict leading to asthmatic bronchitis.

-         Pollens or allergy to such may also trigger an allergic response resulting to the same condition.

-         Similarly, a person suffering from viral or bacterial infection of the airways, especially the respiratory tract can lead to inflammation of the airways due to secretions.

-         Stress, when it takes it toll on a person with asthma is more likely to experience a tightening in the airways. Stress may be physical or emotional.

Signs and Symptoms of Asthmatic Bronchitis

Breathing Difficulty is a landmark symptom of asthmatic bronchitis. This occurs due to the inflammation of the airways. Chest pain and tightness may also accompany this condition because of the pressure one exerts when breathing.

Wheezing, a whistle-like sound heard upon exhalation is very common among people with asthmatic bronchitis. This is due to the relatively small circumference/ area where air passes through, creating a musical-like sound.

Upper respiratory tract infections may also take place and exacerbate more frequently in people with asthmatic bronchitis. Moreover, the presence of respiratory secretions, whether thick or thin in consistency is also a common sign of asthmatic bronchitis.

Medications for Asthmatic Bronchitis

Since the bronchial tissues become inflamed in the case of asthmatic bronchitis, medications to dilate the bronchial walls are necessary. These are called bronchodilators. After administering bronchodilators, corticosteroids are given to lessen the inflammation and swelling of the bronchial lining.

In specific cases like viral or bacterial infections, doctors may prescribe drugs to supplement such conditions.

Preventing Asthmatic Bronchitis

There are simple ways by which one can prevent the development or exacerbation of asthmatic bronchitis. Since this condition is frequently triggered by allergens, avoiding exposure to allergens and performing desensitization in one’s room or workplace is important. Also, making use of masks when driving or going out into a smoke-polluted street can be beneficial.
