Americans: Heavy Soda Drinkers

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reported that about half of all Americans drink soda or sugary beverages each single day. It was revealed that one out of twenty people drink about four cans of soda daily, despite the fact that the recommended daily maximum soda consumption is only half a can or less. The statistics include both adults and children and is something that the government must take into consideration.

Soda beverages and other sugary drinks are responsible to the explosive rates of obesity among children and adults, as well as many other medical problems like diabetes, heart disease and the like. Propositions have been made in the congress pertaining to cutting back the consumption of these beverages. Some officials have considered additional taxes to such drinks and banning the sale of these products in school where kids have access to them during school hours.

About a hundred other advocacy groups have joined the bandwagon in responding to the need of limiting or controlling the sale of these products. Even the American Heart Association have put their best foot forward by planning to stop the provision of these beverages in their properties and during business meetings. New media campaigns will be launched aiming to give the general public awareness as to how these beverages can affect their life in the long run.

The following data were revealed in the latest study of the CDC:

-          About half of all Americans drink sugared beverages a day.

-          Generally, males consume more soda than females. The statistics on males is higher in terms of adolescent and teens aging 12-19 years old revealing an equivalent consumption of about two cans a day.

-          In terms of socioeconomics, poor people tend to drink more soda than affluent/ high income people.

-          African-Americans drink more soda drinks than any other races in the US.

Sugary beverages are not actually bane—it only happens that these can be consumed at a moderate amount. The recommended daily serving of a sugared beverage is just about 64 calories daily and this is equivalent to a little less than half of a twelve ounce Coca-Cola. An average can of Coke or other sugary juice or beverage contains 10-12 teaspoons of sugar.

While efforts have been exerted in regulating the sale of soda drinks in schools and institutions, it was found out that more than half of these soda drinks are actually consumed at home and that less than one percent of the drinks are bought in school. This fact is actually alarming since it would be very difficult, if not impossible to impose a regulation on buying sodas for home consumption.

Meanwhile, some institutions like the Carney Hospital, has passed a policy to stop the sale of soft drinks and other sugared beverages. Starting its implementation, sale of sodas significantly dropped and their clienteles started to adjust to drinking distilled water or other non-sugared drinks.
