African children die from avoidable ailments

Africa is one of the countries with the most underdeveloped healthcare systems, where millions of people live with untreatable diseases such as Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) which alone claims almost a thousand lives every day. However, many more deaths occur (especially among children) as a result of illnesses whose cure has been found decades ago in modern countries. An average number of 350 million children worldwide do not have access to healthcare and almost two thirds of them live in African countries such as Nigeria, Ethiopia and Liberia.

The British charity ‘Save the Children’ says about 800 children die daily in Africa because they are unable to acquire treatments for preventable diseases like pneumonia, diarrhea, measles or malaria. The group fighting for children’s rights requires donors all around the world to involve in helping the less fortunate gain access to free basic medications that can save thousands of lives. The lack of founding is not the only problem people in Africa have to deal with – the lack of specialized personnel is a more acute issue, as there are very few trained healthcare workers. ‘Children are five times more likely to die before their fifth birthday (…) than children living in countries with enough health workers’, the ‘Save the Children’ group report said.
