According to recent healthy survey, almost one in 10 people in the country have a chance of developing depression, clinical or otherwise. Amongst these, the number of children who are succumbing to increasing stress levels and developing depression is increasing at an alarming rate. In another study, it was found that children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are at a higher risk of developing depression during their tender years. The chances that any of these children in the age group of 5 to 13 years may end up committing suicide are also enhanced considerably.
Those diagnosed with ADHD are known to find it difficult to concentrate on things and get distracted frequently. They are also unable to exercise much control on their activities as to what they are saying or doing in comparison to their healthier counterparts or those without ADHD. This leads to an increase in the general agitation levels which is harmful for the functioning of the mind.
Research also concluded that those adults who have been diagnosed with ADHD are also at a considerable risk of developing dysthymia or other fatalistic depression. The research that was carried on 248 children diagnosed with ADHD revealed astonishing results. More than 5% children, that is to say around 17 of them said that they have a suicide plan ready with them when they were between 8 years and 18 years old. The risk of depression and suicidal tendencies are further boosted if the mother also had depressive disorders in addition to the child being affected with ADHD.
