A Reported Increase in the Number of Teens Who Have HPV Vaccine Shots

Vaccination is a very important strategy forwarded by the government and many health care professionals in order to help many individuals enhance and boost their immune system to certain diseases which can put the general public at risk. Recommendations about the use of vaccines have been released especially about the use of HPV vaccines, in which recently, new recommendation says that boys should also receive HPV shots. The very goal of vaccination is to protect the general population, but this be achieved if majority of the population received the shots. Today, there is a reported increase of the number of teenagers who are receiving the three new vaccinations recommended, but, improvements should be further, according to government researchers.

The are three new recommended vaccines which include: TdaP vaccine which is used to protect individuals against the debilitating effects of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertusis or whooping cough, meningitis vaccine and also the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine which can protect women from having cervical cancer and other diseases caused by HPV.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the team who reported the improvements in terms of the number of teens who are vaccinated, that in general, there was about a 32 per cent increase in the numbers of teens who were up-to-date on the mentioned three vaccines. In the year 2006, there were only reported 10 per cent teenagers, who were up-to-date to the three recommended vaccines, and by year 2009, CDC found out that the percentage increase up to 42 per cent.

The report which will be published in the December issue of Pediatrics, utilized data gathered by the National Immunization Survey – Teen from year 2006 to 2009. The coverage of the survery includes children ages 13 to 17 in United States.

Furthermore, the researchers found out that from year 2006 to 2009, the average reported percentage of teenagers who are receiving the three recommended vaccines increased, specifically, for the vaccine TdaP, the reported increase was from 11 per cent to 56 per cent, for meningitis vaccine, rate of teenagers who are receiving the shots rose from 12 per cent to 54 per cent, and HPV vaccine, the rate of girls who are getting at least one shot increased from 25 per cent to 44 per cent, also, for those girls who are receiving the three required dose, numbers rose from 18 to 27 per cent.

-          Some studies suggest that an estimated 15 percent of men and women between the ages of 15 and 49 are currently infected with genital HPV. Women, especially young women, have the highest levels of known HPV infections.

-          An average of 14 percent of American female college students get infected with genital HPV each year.

-          An average of 28 to 46 percent of women under the age of 25 are infected with genital HPV.

-          On average, 60 percent of HIV-negative gay or bisexual men have genital HPV. About 26 percent of HIV-negative women have genital HPV.
