Insecticides contain toxic substances that can be extremely harmful to people if administered in high dosage. Before allowing them to be put on the market, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency makes sure the toxicity of such products does not go beyond a certain level which can be detrimental to human health and to the environment.
Perhaps the most bothersome insects are bed bugs, because they live indoors. But using insecticides in a closed space where you spend a large amount of time can have devastating effects in the long run. A study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that during a three-year period, 80 people in seven states got sick from insecticides and one person died. The victims are believed to have wrongly administered insecticides, either by using them abusively or by exposing themselves to the toxic chemicals for a long period of time.
The number of cases is not yet concerning, but in order to avoid any other casualties, Dr. Geoff Calvert of CDC advises people to call in an exterminator rather then dealing with the problem themselves. ‘At this point, it’s not a major public health problem’ he says. Regardless, toxins cannot bring health benefits; therefore people have to be well aware of what they are using. For example, malathion should never be used inside houses. A couple in Ohio and their child fell ill after being exposed to it.
